Toonami Referenced in Local Newspaper Posted Friday, October 24, 2003, 12:32AM by Meteo
"The Redlands Daily Facts, a daily newspaper serving Redlands, CA since 1890, referenced Toonami in its review of the video game ""Viewtiful Joe."" The paragraph with the mention reads:

""The game's cel-shaded visuals also convey more retro sensibilities. ""Joe' looks and acts like an old Japanese cartoon show. It has speed lines, ""bam' and ""pow' sound effects and cheesy dialogue. You'd think you were watching something on ""Toonami.'""

The full review can be read here. For commentary, click ""Read More""

This may not seem like much, but it really shows how Toonami has made it into the mainstream. We are far past the days when Toonami was possibly a failed experiment. Instead the idea of ""Toonami"" is now even being used outside the realm of cartoons. The writer of the story could have picked a specific cartoon to compare ""Viewtiful Joe"" to, but instead thought ""Toonami"" worked better. Furthermore, the writer didn't even feel a need to describe what Toonami is, it is assumed in the article that the readers will understand. Why do people understand? Because the revolution is still being televised.

Time Warner pulling itself out of AOLs hole; but SEC still looms overhead. Posted Wednesday, October 22, 2003, 12:48PM by andromaton
"Toonami's uberlord Time Warner, Inc. said it made a third quarter profit of $541 million this year. Compared to the loss of $55 million in the same quarter last year it seems Time Warner is fixing AOL's mistakes after all. Quarterly revenues also increased by 4% and operating income rose by 7%.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) continues to pursue its investigation of shady accounting at Time Warner, Inc., parent company of Warner Bros. and Cartoon Network, The New York Times reports.

The agency has subpoenaed Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons, former AOL chairman Stephen Case, and other top executives for questioning about an advertising deal the company made with German music and publishing company Bertelsmann.

Music From Toonami Available for Download Posted Tuesday, October 21, 2003, 12:06AM by meteo
"With the release of Apple's iTunes for Windows, legal downloads of music featured on Toonami are now available to most Toonami viewers with a computer. So far the only Toonami related tracks available are The White Stripes ""Fell in Love with a Girl"" and the three Gorillaz songs seen on Toonami. However, now artists are being constantly added.

According to PC World, iTunes has been downloaded one million times by Windows in the past 3.5 days. In that same period over a million songs have been sold. Songs retail for $.99 each.

Of course, if like the good folks at Williams St. you used a Macintosh, you could have done this a long time ago.

Schedule Change Today: Bye Jack, Hello Justice League" Posted Sunday, October 19, 2003, 11:25PM by meteo
"Welcome to October where the ratings necessity of the holiday advertising season forces schedule changes on a whim. Similar to the ""Batman Beyond"" situation last year, ""Samurai Jack"" only lasted 2 weeks on the block. At least it isn't being replaced by a next day repeat of ""Dragonball."" While it will be sad to see Jack go, at least we get something decent in return...

""Justice League"" Season 2

Originally this was supposed to start in November, but it has been bumped up by two weeks. So far these episodes have only been seen on Saturdays and thus, Toonami is getting the first weekday run of these episodes, not CN primetime. For the full schedule click ""Read More""

Nintendo Buys Part of Bandai; Sony Screwed Later Posted Thursday, October 16, 2003, 11:28AM by KnuxFive
"Nintendo has purchased 2.7% of stocks in Bandai, the mega-company that makes the Toonami animés Blue Submarine No. 6, The Big O, .hack//SIGN, Outlaw Star... and the countless Gundam series.

With Nintendo now being one of the top ten shareholders in the company, chances are that this could lead to bigger things, whether it be Bandai making some Nintendo animés to Bandai games being exclusive to the GCN and GBA...

Top Toonami Ratings - August 2003 Posted Saturday, October 11, 2003, 2:39AM by meteo
"The Top 108 Cartoon Network Telecasts for August are out and 2 out of the 4 Toonami shows made it on the list. ""Justice League"" had its highest single episode rating yet while ""Dragonball Z"" returned to the list. Overall it was a good month for CN, the lowest # in the Top 108 was an 2.0.

For more information click ""Read More""

Remember, with 31 days in August, 24 hours in a day and considering that most CN telecasts are 1/2 an hour long, there were possibly over 1,300 telecasts in the month. Thus, the list only covers shows that placed in about the Top 10% or so. A show could fail to make this list and still have good, great or even excellent ratings.

Here are the Toonami shows that made the list:

#51: JUSTICE LEAGUE - 7/30/03 - Wed - 5.0P-5.5P - 2.1
#56: DRAGON BALL Z - 8/28/03 - Thu - 5.5P-6.0P - 2.0

There were approximately 80 Toonami telecasts in the month of August and thus about 2.5% of those made Cartoon Network's Top 10% list. It was a down month for the block, when compared to the overall network, for this ratings indicator, but it should be noted that these ratings take into account everybody watching Cartoon Network. With regards to Toonami, CN is for the most part only interested in the 9-14, 6-11 and 6-17 ratings (although other viewers are certainly nice to have as well).

Furthermore, it should be pointed out that I believe this is the highest Cartoon Network's ratings have been since they started making these monthly lists available. The lowest number provided was a 2.0, while in the past the highest has sometimes been a 1.8. Thus, several Toonami shows could have easily placed in the high 1.X's and still had great ratings.
